Walking into the headquarters of Marriott International and Hilton in Washington, D.C., I immediately felt a mix of excitement, curiosity, and disbelief. As a student in the School of Hospitality Business at Broad, I have spent a lot of time learning about hospitality in classrooms, but this experience allowed me to see the industry come to life in a way that felt both tangible and inspiring.
At Marriott’s headquarters, I immediately noticed the intentionality behind everything. From the physical space to the way employees interacted, there was a clear emphasis on creating meaningful experiences. Listening to professionals discuss corporate strategy, brand positioning, and guest satisfaction gave me a deeper appreciation for how much thought goes into every aspect of hospitality. It made me realize that what guests see on the surface is only a small part of a much larger system designed to make their experience seamless and memorable.
When I visited Hilton, I experienced a different but equally impactful perspective. The conversations focused heavily on innovation, leadership, and the importance of maintaining trust on a global scale. I was especially struck by how passionate everyone was about their work. It was clear that hospitality is not just a job for them, but a purpose-driven field where people have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on others. Hearing their experiences helped me reflect on my own goals and the type of leader I aspire to become.
This trip also allowed me to connect my academic experiences with my personal background. Growing up helping run my family business, Everything Is Cheesecake, I have always understood hospitality from a hands-on perspective. I learned early on the importance of customer service, attention to detail, and creating a welcoming environment. However, visiting these headquarters showed me how those same values can be scaled and supported through structure, data, and strategic decision-making. It gave me a clearer understanding of how I can take what I have learned personally and apply it in a larger professional setting.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this experience was the sense of belonging I felt. Being in those spaces, speaking with professionals, and asking questions helped me see that I am capable of being part of environments like these. It shifted my mindset from wondering if I belong to understanding that I do, and that my experiences and perspective have value.
Overall, this trip deepened my understanding of the hospitality industry and strengthened my passion for it. It reinforced the idea that hospitality is about more than service. It is about creating intentional experiences, building relationships, and leading with purpose. As I continue my journey at the Broad College of Business, I am excited to carry these insights with me and continue working toward a future where I can contribute to the industry in a meaningful way.
