Carl BorchgrevinkMeet our Interim Director, Dr. Carl Borchgrevink

Q: Why did you want to become a Spartan?
A: The global reputation of Michigan State University and the reputation of The School of Hospitality Business. This school was the perfect match, it allowed for me to complete my Ph.D. while I could provide a needed skill set of Food and Beverage Background. Michigan State means a lot to me as I can still remember my first day January 9, 1989. Both of my children have also graduated from Michigan State.

Q: What made you want to teach hospitality?
A: At first I wanted to complete a graduate degree to increase my knowledge in this area and to progress my career. After teaching a class at University of Massachusetts Amherst during my master’s program I found I loved to teach. I really enjoyed speaking to the students and interacting with them during class.

Q: Other than the fact you’re from Norway and your hospitality career started at age 14, what’s one interesting fact about you?
A: I have a terrible fear of heights!

Q: Do you have any advice for our students?
A: Follow your dreams, try something out if it doesn’t work try something new. Make sure you pursue what you want to do. The path to success is not always straight.
