From our beginnings in 1927, Michigan State has been the proud home of The School of Hospitality Business. Hospitality Business Spartans have driven innovation, led with integrity, and left their mark on organizations across the globe.

As we prepare to celebrate our centennial in 2027, we look boldly to the future. A $20 million fundraising campaign is focused on expanding scholarship opportunities, enhancing experiential learning, attracting top students, elevating our brand, and securing world-class faculty. Collectively, these pillars will ensure our School continues to set the standard of excellence in hospitality business education.

Areas of Support

Elevating the Future of Hospitality Business – 100 Year Fund

We fund the future by supporting staff and faculty dedicated to attracting top students, increasing our enrollment, and elevating our brand. This ensures that we are exploring opportunities to engage with alumni and increasing widespread awareness of The School of Hospitality Business.

We invite alumni, students, faculty, staff, recruiters, industry partners, and friends to celebrate this milestone with us. Your support will help shape the next century of Spartan leadership in hospitality and beyond.

The School of Hospitality Business Student Support Fund

Group of students that received scholarships from The School of Hospitality Business.

We aim to secure $6 million in scholarship support, making Hospitality Business education accessible to more students and providing 100% of students eligible for scholarships to receive funding. We are dedicated to secure $1 million for experiential learning and $1 million to endow student travel needs for conferences, competitions, workshops, and education abroad.

Gifts to this fund will help expand scholarship opportunities and enhance experiential learning. These opportunities will enable students to advance their career readiness.

A Glance Back in History


  • 1927
    The Education Committee of the Michigan Hotel Association met to discuss development of a college-level hotel management school. Hotel Training Course is approved by Michigan State College.
  • 1928
    The first curriculum for the course is approved at Michigan State College. Bernard Remi Proulx, first Professor of Hotel Administration, is appointed Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts and Director of Hotel Training Course.
  • 1929
    First classes in the course are held. There are 18 students majoring in Hotel Training Course.
  • 1944
    The course’s name is changed to Hotel Administration Program (School of Business and Public Service).
  • 1947
    The Kellogg Foundation grants $1.4 million for construction of the Kellogg Center for Continuing Education. The program is divided into three major areas of concentration: Hotel Management, Restaurant Management, and Institutional Management.
  • 1950
    The program is renamed The Division of Hotel, Restaurant and General Institutional Management (School of Business and Public Service).
  • 1951
    Kellogg Center for Continuing Education is opened; its first general manager is Weldon S. Garrison (BA ’46); and the Division’s offices are moved to the Kellogg Center. Donald Greenaway (BA ’34) is appointed to develop and direct the Restaurant Program. Enrollment increases to 300. Les Gourmets if founded as a student organization.
  • 1956
    Division’s name is changed to School of Hotel, Restaurant & Public Service. The first Les Gourmets dinner-dance is held in the Kellogg Center Ballroom.
  • 1961
    The Eppley Foundation grants the University $1.5 million to build the Eugene C. Eppley Center for Graduate Studies in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management.
  • 1962
    The Eppley Center opens and The School’s offices are moved to the 4th floor.
  • 1976
    Fall enrollment reaches 986 students including 45 MBA degree candidates and 137 Travel and Tourism Management majors.
  • 1981
    CAREER EXPO is founded.
  • 1989
    The School of HRIM Food Production and Management Education Facility opens in the Kellogg Center and the Visiting Distinguished Chefs Series is founded.
  • 1991
    Internship office is renamed the Student & Industry Resource Center.
  • 1992
    The first annual Hospitality Association/HRIM Alumni Association Auction is held in the Kellogg Center.
  • 1993
    Completed a $5 million leadership campaign, raising $5.1 million. Offices are relocated to the newly renovated 2nd floor of Eppley Center. The Spartan Sponsors Mentor Program is launched.
  • 1995
    The HRIM’s name is changed to The School of Hospitality Business.
  • 1996
    The Michael L. Minor Master of Science in Foodservice Management is launched as a complement to its MBA in hospitality business.
  • 2001
    Becomes independent within The Eli Broad College of Business.
  • 2002
    Celebrates 75 years and publishes an anniversary history book, The Legacy of the Leader.
  • 2005
    Faculty develops and launches a specialization in Real Estate and Development.
