For the second year, the Global Sales Leadership Society, a student-led organization affiliated with the sales leadership minor, has organized and will host a five-kilometer run to honor the memory of Kelli Hughes, late wife of Doug Hughes, associate professor of marketing. The event will take place Saturday, April 23.
Profits from the event go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund in Kelli’s honor. Over $5,000 was raised at the event last year, and that number has already been surpassed this year.
“Ovarian cancer is an insidious disease that unfortunately can strike with no warning and that can affect even the healthiest of women. Over 20,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and over 15,000 die of it annually. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women. Research is needed to discover more effective diagnostics and treatment for this terrible robber of life, and ultimately to develop a cure,” said Doug.
“I am very touched that these students have chosen to honor Kelli in this way and for their efforts in raising money for this great cause,” he said.
The run is open to all. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 the day of the race. Advance registrants will receive a Kelli Hughes Memorial 5K T-shirt, while T-shirts will be provided on a first-come-first-serve basis to on-site registrants.
Registration and check-in will take place between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m. at the MSU Auditorium loop.
