Russell Johnson, associate professor of management, has been honored as the 2014 recipient of the Withrow Emerging Scholar Award. This award is presented to a faculty member who, early in his or her career, makes substantial contributions to the college in the areas of teaching, research, and service.
Johnson joined the Broad College in 2010 from the University of South Florida, where he was a faculty member for four years. Before that, he earned his doctorate in psychology from the University of Akron. In that short time, he has developed a strong international presence as a scholar in the area of organizational behavior.
He has been a prolific researcher, publishing more than 60 articles and chapters, with 13 placed in top-tier journals in just the past five years. He has 18 more manuscripts under review or revision for resubmission. He also serves on thirteen editorial review boards, including all of the top journals in his field.
Last year, Johnson received the prestigious Distinguished Early Career Award for Research from the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists, as well as numerous reviewer awards from the journals he serves.
His research focuses on self-regulation in employee motivation, the role of self-concept constructs in employee behavior and employee commitment, and the conceptualization and analysis of higher-order constructs reflecting individual behavior in organizational settings.
The Withrow Emerging Scholar Award was established through an endowment from John D. and Dortha J. Withrow and first awarded in 1992.
The award was presented at the faculty meeting held September 12, 2014.
