February marks fashion’s most important month of the year. Starting in New York and ending in Paris, every year designers from across the globe debut their fall collections in New York, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks all month long.
Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business has its tie to fashion month 2017 with alumna and designer, Pamella Roland DeVos (BA Business Administration ‘84). The fashion designer hails from Grand Rapids, MI, and she continues to split her time between Michigan and New York.
The label, which premiered its first fall couture collection in 2002, showed its fall 2017 collection at New York Fashion Week on Friday, February 10. The eveningwear collection had no shortage of glamour or glitz, featuring embellished evening gowns and tailored suits in earth and jewel tones. In an unlikely connection, the collection paid tribute to modern art and abstract expressionist artist, Mark Rothko.
“I just love the colors that he used”, DeVos told Vogue. “When I saw his work I knew that these were the colors that I wanted in my show”.
DeVos was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 2010, the same institution that oversees Fashion Week. She has also received the “Top Woman-Owned Business” award in Michigan.
DeVos’ namesake brand, Pamella Roland, has become a label of choice for both retailers and stylists. Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, Karlie Kloss, Jennifer Hudson, Emmy Rossum, Lily Collins, Hilary Rhoda, Eva Longoria, and Madonna are just a few of the A-list clientele who look to the couture label when it comes to dressing for the red carpet. The brand is also carried by a number of luxury department stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as international and domestic specialty stores.
In the words of the brand’s biography, “the broad demographic appeal of the collections is by no means accidental, as Pamella meets and caters to like-minded women outside of the fashion centers of New York and Los Angeles who crave the same level of sophistication, comfort, and glamour”.
