Biography
Dr. Matthew J. Anderson, Ph.D./FEA is a professor of accounting
and the associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion and Faculty
Excellence Advocate for the Broad College of Michigan State University. He is a life member of the American
Accounting Association (AAA), where he has served as a member of the AAA’s Council,
and as a member of the Research Committee.
Professor Anderson has chaired the AAA Outstanding Accounting Educator
Award Committee and the Outstanding Dissertation Award Committee. He also served as the regional financial
accounting editor for the Midwest AAA meeting.
Professor Anderson teaches financial accounting, and his research
focused on expertise and individual decision-making issues in market settings. He has served on the editorial boards of the
Accounting Review and Issues in Accounting Education and as a reviewer for
numerous journals. He has published in
the Accounting Review, the Journal of Accounting Research, and Organizational
Behavior and Human Decision Processes, among others.
Dr. Anderson is a member of the PhD Project Hall of Fame and is a past
recipient of a Michigan State University Excellence in Diversity award. He is also an inaugural winner of the Ernst
& Young Inclusive Excellence Award.
Dr. Anderson was also the education recipient of the Jason Richardson
Foundation “Saluting Greatness” award – based on service to the teaching
profession and his diversity and inclusion efforts. He is also a past president
of the Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators Association of Michigan State
University, and was selected as a “Lansing Legend” for his work in the
diversity space. He is also a member of
the Council of Diversity Deans of Michigan State University. Most recently, Dr. Anderson was selected as
the inaugural director focusing on diversity and inclusion for the American
Accounting Association (AAA). In this
latter role he focused on assisting in the formulation of a diversity strategic
plan for the AAA. He also chaired the AAA
diversity committee.
Dr. Anderson is a past director of the doctoral program in
accounting at Michigan State University.
During his tenure, Michigan State University was a leader in recruiting
women and people of color for doctoral education. Currently, Dr. Anderson
serves on the board of Haven House, a local family-oriented homeless shelter,
where he is treasurer. He is also on an
advisory board focused on diversity and inclusion of the Honors College of
Michigan State University. Finally, he
is an unabashed, dyed-in-the-wool Spartan!
