Suman Basuroy, professor of marketing and co-director of the marketing doctoral program, will become the Broad College Department of Marketing’s newest chairperson, effective August 2021. Basuroy will take the helm from Richard Spreng, associate professor of marketing, who has served as interim chairperson since 2019.
“It is an incredible honor to assume the chairmanship of the marketing department at the Eli Broad College,” Basuroy said. “I am truly humbled. I am grateful to the entire faculty, but especially to Dr. Richard Spreng for his great leadership over the past several years and for graciously educating me on numerous issues.”
Basuroy joined the Broad College in January and was previously the Graham Weston Endowed Professor, marketing Ph.D. program coordinator and chair of the marketing department at the Carlos Alvarez College of Business at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Prior to UTSA, he was the Ruby K. Powell Professor and an associate professor of marketing and supply chain at the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma.
He earned his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Pittsburgh, master’s in economics from Carnegie Mellon University and undergraduate degree in economics and mathematics from Brandeis University.
Basuroy’s key research interests include the marketing of cultural products — motion pictures, video games, fashion — and retailing. He has published numerous academic papers in journals such as Management Science, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Business, Quantitative Marketing and Economics, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Consumer Psychology, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Marketing Letters, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Cultural Economics and Journal of Business Research.
In addition, Basuroy has received numerous awards, including the 2009 Carol and Bruce Mallen Lifetime Achievement Award for Published Scholarly Contributions to Motion Picture Industry Studies from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Researcher of the Year Award from the Florida Atlantic University College of Business (then the Barry Kaye College of Business) in 2007. He has been a senior fellow of the Carl De Santis Center for Motion Picture Industry Studies since 2007. He also serves on the editorial review boards of Journal of Marketing, Marketing Letters and Journal of Retailing.
Basuroy is excited to take on this new role and embody all that it means to be a Spartan. “MSU is a place of great scholarship and mentoring, and I want to continue that tradition,” he said. “As President John Quincy Adams said, ‘If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader’ — I think I want to make that my goal.”
