  • Biography
    Suman Basuroy is Professor of Marketing, and Co-Director of the Marketing Doctoral Program at the Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University. Previously, he was Graham Weston Endowed Professor, Coordinator of the Marketing PHD Program, and Chairman of the Marketing Department of UTSA, College of Business.  He graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, majoring in Economics and Mathematics (Honors) from Brandeis University, Waltham, MA.  He received the Wien International Scholarship (1982-1986) and the Arnold Shapiro Prize in Mathematics (1986) at Brandeis University.  He obtained his Masters in Economics from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, and his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Pittsburgh, PA.Before joining UTSA, between 2009 and 2014, he was the Ruby K. Powell Professor and Associate Professor (with tenure) of Marketing and Supply Chain at the Price College of Business, the University of Oklahoma. Before joining the University of Oklahoma, Suman taught at the College of Business, Florida Atlantic University, FL (where he was an associate professor with tenure), School of Management, University at Buffalo, NY, and at the School of Business, Rutgers University, NJ. He had been a Visiting Professor at Universita Luigi Bocconi (Bocconi University) in Milan, Italy, University of Muenster, Muenster, Germany, and an Honorary Research Associate at Bocconi University’s Center for Research on Markets and Industries (CERMES). At the University at Buffalo he received a Teaching Award in 2002 from the MBA students and a Certificate of Recognition for his teaching in 2005. In 2007, he was a finalist for the Exceptional Faculty Award at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus. At the Price College of Business, University of Oklahoma, Suman received the Provost’s Teaching Innovation Grant, 2012-2014, for innovative restructuring of the large (275 students) Principles of Marketing course that he taught every semester since 2009. He has successfully led Oklahoma students on Summer Study Abroad Program to Vichy, France, in 2012, 2013 and 2014.In 2019, Suman (with co-authors Bradley J. Allen, 2017 UTSA PhD student now Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Arkansas, and Deepa Chandrasekaran who is Associate Professor of Marketing at UTSA) were selected Finalist for the Marketing Science Institute/H. Paul Root Award (The award is given to a paper published in the Journal of Marketing that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of the practice of marketing in a calendar year).  In 2010 Suman (along with co-authors S. Abraham Ravid of Yeshiva University and John Wald of UTSA) was the recipient of the Werner Pommerehne Prize for the best article published in the Journal of Cultural Economics. In 2009 he won the 2009 Carol and Bruce Mallen Lifetime Achievement Award for Published Scholarly Contributions to Motion Picture Industry Studies from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. He also delivered a Distinguished Lecture at the Paramount Studios, LA. In 2007 he won the Researcher of the Year Award from the Barry Kaye College of Business. He is a Senior Fellow of the Carl De Santis Center for the Motion Picture Studies since 2007. Suman is on the Editorial Review Board of some premier marketing journals - Marketing Letters and the Journal of Retailing. His writings has also appeared in the Indian Express.His key research interests include marketing of the cultural products (motion pictures, video games, fashion) and retailing.  Suman has published numerous academic papers in prestigious national and international journals such as the Management Science, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Business/Chicago, Quantitative Marketing and Economics, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Consumer Psychology, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Marketing Letters, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Cultural Economics, Journal of Business Research and several others.  He has given invited talks at many national and international universities including the University of Miami, University of Florida, Indiana University-Bloomington, SUNY Stony-Brook, University of British Columbia, Norwegian Business Institute, Indian Institute of Management, Bocconi University, University of Muenster, ESSEC in Paris, France, Università di Roma Tre, Rome, Italy among others. His research has been featured in the media including the Money magazine, Times of India, and National Public Radio, www.howstuffworks.com, KSAT (TV station).
     His research on retailing has been funded twice (2001 and 2006) by the International Council of Shopping Center Research in New York.  He was also the recipient of a multi-year grant from the Carl De Santis Center for Motion Pictures Studies (2007-2009).  Suman served as a member of the Faculty Board of Directors, Fred Jones Junior Museum of Art in Norman, OK (2012-2014); Board of Directors of Norman Arts Council (June 2011-June 2014). He also served on the Board of Directors of Transition House in Norman, OK (2012-2014). He was a Member of the Board of Directors of Center for Exploratory Photography and Art (CEPA) Gallery, Buffalo, New York between 2002 and 2005, and was a Co-Chair of CEPA’s 2004 Biennial Art Auction. He is interested in languages; he speaks Bengali, Hindi, French, Italian (very elementary), and is currently learning Spanish. He is interested in photography, art, film and literature.
